AppleMac Issues
A number of Mac installation problems arose when the Mac version of SST
was released. Chandra, a lady captain from the United States and something
of a Mac expert, kindly provided these ‘standard’ answers for other Mac
users who were having problems.

A Dumb Marsinta
Always restart your computer after any StarShip Titanic crashes. You should
run Disk First Aid and make any necessary repairs, as well.
The following are curative options are for the technically-capable.
You might prefer at any stage to try a clean Mac install process (see Contents).
Rebuild Your Desktop
As your Mac is Starting Up - after the "Happy Mac" appears - press and
hold down the Command (Apple) key and the Option-key until you are presented
with a message asking if you really want to rebuild your hard drive's desktop.
Answer "OK" for every drive that you have connected (except your CD drive).
This could take several minutes.
Next open your Memory Control Panel.
-
If Virtual Memory is selected ON, turn it OFF and restart.
-
Try talking to Marsinta again.
Increasing SST's Memory Allocation
If Marsinta is still mute, increase SST's Preferred Memory allocation by
156k or more.
Here's how to do that for Mac OS8 and above (earlier systems are simpler
still):
-
Open the folder that contains SST
-
Select the program's icon "Starship Titanic."
-
With the icon highlighted, mouse up to the File menu and pull down to select
"Get Info."
-
In the box that appears, select and hold down on "General Information"
until more options appear.
-
Pull down to "Memory" and let up.
-
Next to "Preferred size," add 156 or more to what is already there.
Close that window and try talking to Marsinta again.
Checking Out The Extensions
One user reported that Marsinta finally vocalized after turning off some
of the CD extensions and restarting. I have no idea what CD extension did
the trick for that user but try disabling your CD extensions.
I'd suggest you go a step further and temporarily turn off all
extensions/control panels except the following:
-
Your Extensions Manager set (a Ctrl Panel and an Extn)
-
Appearance Extension (Extension)
-
Text Encoding Converter (Extension)
-
Game Sprockets (Extensions)
-
The Quicktime set, as follows:
-
Quicktime (Extension)
-
QuickTime MPEG Extension (Extension)
-
QuickTime PowerPlug (Extension)
-
QuickTime Settings (ctrl panel)
-
Indeo Video (Extension)
-
Sound Manager
If this works, launch SST and play a little bit of it 2-3 times. Hopefully,
this will grease SST's wheels and you can revert to your standard System
settings for future play.
Update Your Driver
If Marsinta is still not talking, update your Startup Drive's disk driver.
Changing The Running Disc
Hopefully, Marsinta will have regained her voice and her intelligence before
you reach this low point in my list. This last trick should not be necessary
but I know it fixed the problem for at least one user.
If your Hard Drive is formatted as Mac OS EXTENDED (this is also known
as HFS+ or HFS Extended), try running SST from a disk that is formatted
as Mac OS STANDARD (HFS). Hopefully you have a spare hard drive or a 2GB
Jaz cartridge or something similar that will fit the bill. It must have
a startup system for your computer installed, as well as SST installed
onto it.
To check how a drive has been formatted, select the drive's icon, press
CMD+I to "get info" for the drive. The "Format" will be displayed among
the other bits of info
Medium Install Drivespace Problem
This official SST technical bulletin was posted at the Simon & Schuster
website.
ALERT: Problems installing the Macintosh version of Starship Titanic
MEDIUM INSTALL ERROR
There is a known problem with the current Starship Titanic installer
for the Macintosh. This problem relates to the medium installation option
provided by that installer.
The medium install option states that 550MBg of disc space is required
to complete the install operation. It has been reported and has subsequently
been confirmed that a medium installation will fail if less than 750MB
of disc space is available before the install is attempted. The installer
will proceed to install Starship Titanic without warning the user of the
lack of disc space. At a later stage in the installation process a dialog
will appear indicating that the destination volume has become full. At
this point the installer will recover the installation by removing all
files it has installed and report that further disc space is required.
For the time being it is recommended that when using the medium
install option, you should ensure that at least 750MB of free disc space
is available in your destination folder.
CD#2 I/O ERROR -- FREE REPLACEMENTS AVAILABLE
A number of customers have encountered difficulties with CD#2 of
the Macintosh version of Starship Titanic, which appears to be the result
of a manufacturing error in some of our discs. If you experience an I/O
error during installation of CD#2, you may have a bad disc. A supply of
replacements is being made available upon request to customers. Please
call (800) 910-0099 for your replacement disc. We sincerely regret any
inconvenience this may have caused you.
Note: the telephone number quoted is for the USA only. Would
all other areas of the world please contact their dealership and request
the free replacement.
Game Launch Errors
Starship Titanic may give an error on launch if a Basic or Deluxe installation
of QuickTime 4 is used. The following may be seen on screen:
"Starship Titanic was unable to load because the following
error occured: 'CTDVException OSMovie.cpp -238"
Workaround this by using the QuickTime 4 AUTHORING install option.

A ‘Clean’ Mac Install Process
Use this method to disable ALL extensions EXCEPT the CD/DVD driver required
to mount the CDs or DVDs necessary to perform an install. This is not really
difficult to do. It will just seem so because of the way the procedure
has been carefully stepped-out to help you.
Please do not try this unless all the below apply:
-
you are using Mac OS 8.5.1 or later
-
you are using an Apple CD or DVD drive
-
you are using the Apple "EXTENSION MANAGER" that is part of your system
version.
You will first need to download the installer patch from StarShip Titanic's
Patch
Site. This is actually a new version of the Starship Titanic Installer
and fixes more than just the "Medium install" bug.
Procedure
1 : Open the Extension Manager control panel and note the name of your
current selected set.
Important: Do not change anything here until you create a New set.
If you do make any accidental changes you can REVERT back to your original
settings any time before you make a new set, quit, or save.)
2 : Mouse up to the FILE menu and select "New Set." Name it something like
"CD driver only."
3 : Mouse up to the EDIT menu and select "All OFF." All of your extensions
will be turned off.
4 : Now locate "Apple CD/DVD Driver" in the Extensions folder list and
check the box next it to activate it.
5 : Click the "Restart" button and restart.
6 : Install SST by running the "Starship Titanic Installer 1.1" which
you downloaded earlier. If you have previously installed QuickTime version
4 onto your computer, be certain to de-select "Install QuickTime 3."
7 : Again restart, this time holding the space bar down until "Extension
Manager" opens during startup.
8 : Click and hold the menu button next to "Selected Set" and select
your original saved setting.
That is it!
